- Williams Charter Township is requesting funding to improve Fisher Road to a reasonable local road standard and correct long-standing issues created by the construction of US-10 nearly 67 years ago. When US-10 was built in the late 1950s, MDOT acquired property that eliminated future connections from Auburn subdivisions to Fisher Road, leaving the road under Auburn’s jurisdiction despite serving primarily Williams Township properties. As a result, the City of Auburn has historically used limited PA51 funds to maintain Fisher Road as gravel, and the road has at times become nearly impassable, especially during spring thaw. A jurisdictional transfer from the City of Auburn to the Bay County Road Commission has now been approved by all parties and confirmed by MDOT in February 2026, enabling proper maintenance and future improvements. The total estimated cost to add a gravel base and pave the road with asphalt is approximately $547,534, with comparable engineering estimates near $575,000, and additional drainage-related costs may apply. Funding these improvements will enhance safety and reliability for residents and businesses, support economic development, provide a potential emergency detour for US-10 closures, and maintain convenient MDOT access for highway maintenance staging.
