- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- The purpose of this legislatively directed spending is to build a new regional fire station #2 in the NE corner of Waterford Township. This new station serves not only Waterford, but also the City of Pontiac and the City of Lake Angelus in a first response manner. Waterford Regional Fire Department serves these three communities through fire/EMS service contracts. The current fire station, located about 1 mile west, is nearly 75 years old. It is obsolete in so many ways and has been limped along for the last 3 decades to keep it open. It is an appropriate use of taxpayer monies as this station is manned 24/7/365 as a regional emergency response hub that includes the other communities mentioned above, but also Independence Twp., and others in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS). This station has responded to Auburn Hills, Holly, Rochester Hills, Springfield and other neighboring communities as requested. WRFD will not say NO to other communities calls for help. This spending affects all the residents that are served in our area and the firefighters assigned to this station. This is an investment that will yield measurable benefits in lives saved, property protects and stronger regional collaboration for decades to come.
