Funding Details

5. Requested amount of the legislatively directed spending item:
$500,000.00
6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The requested funds will be used to construct a laboratory clean room in Grand Rapids to support cellular therapies for a large region of Michigan. Cellular therapies are essential treatments for organ transplant patients and various cancers. New CAR-T therapies, for example, are rapidly being approved for use each year, with a growing patient population now requiring them. Laboratory clean rooms are required to process the patient cells for these life-saving treatments. The ability to process, store, and prepare these lifesaving treatments is beyond the capability of all but few of the largest hospital systems. Versiti’s Grand Rapids-based lab remains one of only three in the state of Michigan equipped to provide these technologies and, importantly, the only lab available to western/northern Michigan hospitals. Without Versiti, patients outside of Detroit and Ann Arbor would not have meaningful access to cutting-edge cancer therapies. The addition of a clean room is needed to support the growing number of patients seeking these cellular therapies. The addition of the clean room will enable Versiti to support nearly 200 additional Michigan cancer patients.
