6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?

Wright Museum of African American History: 38-1882096 Arab American National Museum: 23-7444497 The purpose of this funding request is to continue support for museum operations in the amount totaling $1,500,000.00, with $500,000.00 being allocated equally to each museum to further their outreach and increase their impact across the state. The Zekelman Holocaust Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Arab American National Museum reach half a million visitors of all ages each year through tours, training, special exhibits, and community programs. They equip and empower the public with lessons of history and shape environments that are truly welcome to all who call Michigan home. As the premiere culturally specific museums in Southeast Michigan, The Zekelman Holocaust Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Arab American National Museum meet the objective to reduce hate and discrimination in our state and increase understanding and improve cross cultural communication by engaging students, community members, and professionals from a range of sectors. These institutions bring history to life with specific and emotional storytelling that resonates with individuals and helps them internalize their meaning for today. These firsthand accounts of resistance, resilience, and faith build critical thinking skills and offer tools to fight hatred, lead with empathy, and respect our differences. Continued Legislative support facilitates this impactful work. Past funding: These three museums have received state funding in four of the five past years in the total amount of $6,000,000.00, of which $1,500,000.00 was allocated annually, with $500,000.00 being allocated equally to each museum each year for the past four years funding was received. Note: In FY 2026, $1,500,000.00 funding was within the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity budget with $500,000.00 allocated to each museum. In the three previous fiscal years before that funding was housed within the Department of Civil Rights where they received a total of $1,500,000.00 annually, with $500,000.00 being allocated equally to each museum each year.
