6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
Construction or Restoration of a firehall to house firefighting apparatus and equipment. The Drummond Island Fire Department currently operates from a former school bus garage with no running water or bathroom/shower facility. The Department is the sole firefighting and search & rescue entity on an island that is home to over 1600 residents. The Drummond Island Township provides funds via tax assessments for routine operations (apparatus and equipment repairs, supplies, gasoline and utilities), however there are no funds available for capital expenditures. The non-profit arm of the fire department depends entirely on donations to purchase critical equipment such as dry hydrants and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs).
