- The Ypsilanti City Fire Department (YFD) is requesting State appropriation to acquire a new National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)-compliant fire aerial apparatus to replace their aging frontline, Tower 1. This apparatus has surpassed NFPA standards for frontline service. The department’s current aerial apparatus was purchased in 2007 and is 19 years old, and has become increasingly unreliable, jeopardizing firefighter safety and emergency response efficiency. The aerial is a critical piece of equipment used for fire suppression, rescue operations, and the protection of the city's vital infrastructure. How the project provides public benefit: The Ypsilanti City Fire Department (YFD) is tasked with safeguarding critical infrastructure that is essential to the local, state, and national economies. This infrastructure includes: 1. Healthcare Facilities: Two major Level I trauma center hospitals providing life-saving care for the region. Multiple healthcare centers that support public health needs. 2. Transportation Networks: 198 miles of three major freeways critical to commercial and commuter traffic. 102 miles of railways supporting freight and passenger transport. Two regional airports: Ann Arbor Municipal Airport and Willow Run Airport, both critical to local and regional transportation. 3. Educational Institutions: Seven large school districts serving thousands of students, and two major universities. YFD serves a population of 20,655 residents within Ypsilanti City and provides vital support to Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) partners, collectively serving 372,258 residents across the region. Our existing 2007 fire aerial apparatus has exceeded its operational life span and presents significant operational and safety challenges due to its age and condition.
