- The City of Port Huron seeks funding to replace the storm damaged Tainter Gate at the entrance of the Black River Canal and to stabilize the surrounding shoreline. The January 2024 storm caused severe structural failure to the gate system and erosion along the canal bank, requiring an emergency temporary cofferdam. A permanent replacement—estimated at $7,045,140—is essential to restoring the canal’s flood control function and protecting more than 260 nearby properties from storm surge, seasonal flooding, and shoreline degradation. The Tainter Gate regulates water flow between Lake Huron and the Black River, helping to prevent sediment buildup, preserve water quality, and maintain ecological health. The canal also serves as a vital segment of the Island Loop Route – National Waterways Trail, supporting regional tourism, paddling routes, and safe harbor access for small watercraft during sudden storms. Funding will ensure long term infrastructure resilience, safeguard public and private property, protect environmental resources, and support the local recreation based economy.
