- Project Overview and Community Impact This project will modernize and secure the City of Pleasant Ridge police station, transforming a 1961 facility that has not seen substantial updates in over six decades into a resilient, 21st-century civic asset. The proposed improvements will directly benefit the residents and businesses of Pleasant Ridge, as well as the dedicated police department personnel who serve them. Upgrading critical information technology infrastructure will reduce emergency response times and improve inter-agency coordination with our off-site dispatch (City of Berkley) and fire protection services (City of Ferndale) partners, directly enhancing service delivery to the public. Comprehensive safety and security upgrades, including enhanced access control to non-public areas, will protect sensitive information and ensure the facility remains a secure operations hub for the PRPD. The addition of essential, currently nonexistent support facilities, including a kitchen and showers, will significantly improve workplace conditions for our dedicated officers. This investment in officer well-being will improve workforce retention, ensuring the city continues to be served by experienced, highly trained law enforcement professionals committed to the community. Sustainability and Energy Efficiency To ensure the facility is environmentally and fiscally sustainable, the modernization will include energy efficiency upgrades. In addition to the installation of rooftop solar panels, the project will implement several high-benefit, cost-effective improvements tailored to a 1961 structure. These include: - Building Envelope Sealing: Comprehensive weatherstripping, insulation, and air sealing around aging doors and windows to significantly reduce thermal loss and HVAC strain. - Smart Climate Control: Installation of programmable, zoned smart thermostats to optimize heating and cooling schedules during low-occupancy hours in specific zones. - Water Conservation: Integration of low-flow plumbing fixtures in the newly constructed shower and kitchen facilities. Summary This project is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it represents a fiscally responsible modernization of an existing municipal asset that will yield immediate dividends in law enforcement effectiveness, community safety, environmental sustainability, and the long-term retention of our public safety workforce.
