- Infrastructure Construction and Improvement Project. In conjunction with the MDOT US-2/41 highway reconstruction project scheduled to commence in 2027 and expected to span several years, the local road network will face unprecedented pressure. While traffic management plans are in place, it is anticipated to cause immense stress during large-scale events at the fairgrounds, most notably during the UP State Fair and many other large, public events taking place on the grounds. The construction of 9th Avenue North and North 26th Street will provide critical relief by improving traffic circulation and pedestrian safety in a corridor that currently lacks any sidewalk infrastructure. Beyond transportation, this project addresses urgent utility and safety deficiencies: 1. Fire Suppression & Safety: This area recently suffered a significant fire and currently lacks adequate fire suppression capability. 2. Utility Modernization: The proposal includes the installation of a new storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main to upgrade hydraulic capacity. 3. Infrastructure Reliability: Plan to relocate overhead electric lines and provide reliable drinking water and sewer services to an underserved area. 4. Economic Development: Improvements will bolster the support capacity for the fairgrounds and increase the marketability of neighboring sites adjacent to an incoming distribution center.
