- 6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
- The Detroit Right to Counsel program provides full legal representation and outreach to low-income residents who are facing eviction in 36th District Court and in other housing related administrative proceedings which threaten the resident's occupancy. Right to Counsel provides such representation and outreach through local legal services organizations who specialize in advocating on behalf of residents. Right to Counsel also collaborates with community partners to teach residents about their eviction rights. An additional $1.5 million in State grant funding will allow Right to Counsel to continue post ARPA funding in July 2026, with providing full legal representation to approximately 1500 tenants who need it and necessary outreach. There are over 20,000 eviction filings in the City of Detroit each year.
