6. What is the purpose and how does the legislatively directed spending item provide a public benefit that is an appropriate use of taxpayer money?
The integration of simulation, virtual reality, high-fidelity technologies, and artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into nursing education is essential for preparing the next generation of nurses to efficiently manage increasingly complex health conditions and evolving population needs. It also helps to address some of the clinical placement challenges that can further worsen the existing nursing shortage. Incorporating simulation, virtual realities, and other high-tech use into nursing education is particularly urgent given the persistent nursing shortage in Michigan and across the United States. One of the most significant barriers facing nursing schools is the limited availability of clinical placement sites and qualified preceptors. These constraints restrict student capacity and, in turn, contribute to the ongoing workforce shortage (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2023). Expanding access to high-quality, technology-enhanced simulation offers a strategic solution by supplementing traditional clinical experiences while maintaining rigorous educational standards.
