- Bloomfield Township is requesting funds for the Bloomfield Township Fire Department (BTFD) to update its on-site training facility. The BTFD has always been a strong advocate of training. And with recent retirement turnover and a competitive job market, the BTFD faces a younger, less experienced workforce. With this in mind, the BTFD designed and constructed their own training facility in 2019-using discarded shipping containers as the foundation. This resource has been a significant tool for the men and women of the department but needs to adapt to provide the "next level" of situational training for on-the-job scenarios. The BTFD is looking to add the following items: • A roof prop that will allow personnel to train on ventilating roofs, as they would during a structure fire • A forcible entry door system that will provide training and practice of realistic forcible entry techniques • A fire frame window simulator that allows personnel to train on the various tactics for window ventilation, entry, and egress as well as cutting window bars PROJECT BENEFITS • Having an updated training site allows the BTFD to stay vigilant and ready themselves for any situation. • Having a realistic training site makes the department attractive to potential recruits. • The BTFD is a member of OAKWAY, a mutual aid organization consisting of 11 Oakland County fire departments and serving an additional six nearby communities. These departments share staffing and resources including access to the BTFD training site. This investment would have a huge impact on fire preparedness for a significant portion of Oakland County.
